A new scheme to help young people into work amid the COVID-19 pandemic has been launched by the Government today (2 September).

Businesses will be able to sign up to be a part of the “landmark” £2 billion kickstart scheme, and receive funding to create new job placements for those aged 16 to 24 who are claiming universal credit and at risk of long term unemployment.

The Government has announced it will “fully fund” each kickstart role, paying 100% of the age-relevant National Minimum Wage, National Insurance and pension contributions for 25 hours a week.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak said:

“This isn’t just about kickstarting our country’s economy – it is an opportunity to kickstart the careers of thousands of young people who could otherwise be left behind as a result of the pandemic.”

The scheme will be delivered by the Department of Work and Pensions and is initially open until December 2021.

Applications must be for a minimum of 30 job placements, but businesses that are unable to offer this can partner with other organisations and select a representative to apply.
